Sergio Hudson and Volvo: Pioneering the Future of Luxury Fashion

Craftsmanship Meets Culture: Sergio Hudson’s Collaboration with Volvo

When fashion moves, it moves with purpose. Sergio Hudson, the designer celebrated for infusing power dressing with sophistication and femininity, is proving this point yet again with his latest collaboration with Volvo Cars USA. This partnership showcases a collection that embodies style and functionality, merging the roads with the runway.

A Journey to Charleston

Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Charleston, South Carolina, to witness the unveiling of this exciting collaboration firsthand. The atmosphere was electric, filled with palpable excitement as Volvo’s clean Scandinavian design aesthetic met Sergio’s unapologetic glamour. This capsule collection pays homage to Volvo’s luxurious electric EX90 SUV while also curating a sense of strength and elegance that resonates deeply with Hudson’s design philosophy.

The Must-Have Pieces

At the heart of this collaboration are two standout pieces: the tailored wool blend car coat and the Nordico in Dawn Belt. Both pieces are available beginning October 20 and exemplify Hudson’s signature blend of structure and softness. They are crafted to be both polished enough for the boardroom and cool enough for a weekend outing, showcasing versatility in modern fashion.

Tailored Wool Blend Car Coat

The car coat is a reimagining of a wardrobe staple that Hudson describes as a “swing coat.” Crafted from responsibly sourced wool, this outerwear seamlessly merges vintage allure with contemporary practicality. It’s a thoughtful design that promises both durability and style.

The coat’s soft gray hue is intentionally reflective of the EX90’s minimalist interior, marking a notable shift for Hudson, who is often recognized for his vibrant jewel tones. Embracing gray presented a creative challenge for Hudson, one he welcomed as an opportunity to explore its power and sophistication.

Nordico in Dawn Belt

The Nordico in Dawn Belt represents yet another innovative element of this collaboration, drawing inspiration from Volvo’s legendary three-point seat belt. Made from Nordico—a sustainable, bio-attributed material—this stylish accessory is both eco-conscious and chic. Its wide design, finished with a platinum-inspired buckle featuring co-branded logos, adds an edge of drama and elegance.

This metallic accent pushed Hudson into newfound creative territory. Known for his preference for gold metallics, he acknowledges the significance of using platinum for this limited edition, reflecting Volvo’s 70th anniversary and adding a layer of meaning.

Insight from Sergio Hudson

During a candid conversation with Hudson, he shared his initial reactions to the collaboration. Not entirely sure what to expect when presented with the idea of making a coat from seat fabric, he soon found himself pleasantly surprised by the material’s quality. “You can tell they did a lot with the fabrication of the wool to ensure it’s strong and durable. You can wear it in various weather conditions; it performs,” he explained.

This intersection of functionality and finesse is what makes this collaboration so unique. For Hudson, who has deep roots in South Carolina, the project also evokes a personal connection—his mother, who ignited his passion for fashion, hails from Charleston, and their family’s first car was a Volvo.

The Essence of the Collaboration

What stands out most in this partnership is its natural synergy. Hudson and Volvo share a commitment to grace, grit, and good design. In a world where luxury often stands still, this collaboration exemplifies that true luxury drives forward—embracing both heritage and innovation.

As we observe the evolution of design across various fields, the marrying of Hudson’s fashion expertise with Volvo’s engineering finesse is a reminder that exceptional artistry knows no boundaries. This collection is not merely an offering of clothing or accessories; it signifies a movement—one that celebrates both individual expression and collective progress.
